Young Authors Visits

TESTIMONIALS
"A few weeks after their visit, during our "writer's workshop" time, one of my little boys said very seriously that he wanted to work hard and get better at writing because he wanted to publish a "real" book. I said, "You mean like Miles and William?" and he said yes. I can refer to them all year: "Remember when Miles and William were here and we saw real kids who published their very own book....?" I wanted them to visit because I knew it would be inspirational and motivating, and it was". - 1st Grade Teacher, Creedmoor Elementary, Creedmoor, NC

They were AWESOME and the drumming took it to the nth level - 1st Grade Student, Creedmoor Elementary

"I just wanted to write and tell you how Miles and William have influenced a group of second graders in Austin. I've been volunteering at my granddaughter's school once a week and read to her class for 30 minutes. One of the books that I took one day was the one that Miles and William wrote. They have been absolutely fascinated about the fact that "kids" just like them were writing and were published. Several of these kids have now been writing stories on their own at home. Lots of interest in stepping outside of their "box" has been generated by this book. I thought you might like to let Miles and William know about the impact of their book!" - Grandmother, Austin, Texas

INSPIRING STUDENTS TO READ AND WRITE

Kids are inspired to read and write when they discover that authors can be real kids like them who dreamed of writing a book and did it. The presentation provided by Miles and William and their parents, who are from a family of educators, musicians and storytellers, comes alive in the telling of how the book was envisioned, written, and finally published. It is contagious.

Although My Grandma's Backyard is written for elementary school-age and younger children, Miles and William along with their parents (including grandma) can also speak with older children, teens, or adults about the writing process and/or Miles and William's path to publishing their first book. We also can develop a custom presentation based on your individual needs.

TIPS AND CHECKLIST FOR A SUCCESSFUL AUTHORS VISIT

____ Contact us to make arrangements at least several weeks before Miles and William are to visit your school or group. Miles and William are year-round students in Wake County, North Carolina and are available for author visits during track out days, teacher work days, early release days, weekends, certain holidays or other very special occassions.

____ A Confirmation Agreement will be mailed (or emailed). Please sign and return it. Keep a copy for your records. If applicable, notify us of all special arrangements: directions, hotel, etc. Also, please arrange for payment, if applicable, on the day of the visit. If an invoice or paperwork is needed, please contact us in advance so a check can be prepared. We have outrageously reasonable rates !

____ Place book orders for My Grandma's Backyard at least six weeks ahead of the proposed visit. It's better to have books delivered to you in advance, rather than wait until the day of the program. FOR A DISCOUNT INDICATE YOUR ORDER IS FOR AN AUTHOR'S EVENT. Participants will especially enjoy the event if they're able to take home My Grandma's Backyard and read the book they have purchased before Miles and William arrive for the program.Remember to prepare a book order form (Click Here for a Sample Order Form) and send home to parents with a date due back. Also make reminder announcement(s) to return order forms.

____Have My Grandma's Backyard available in your library, and provide opportunities for readers to read My Grandma's Backyard before the day of the boys' visit. Read and discuss My Grandma's Backyard as part of classroom work. Encourage independent reading, or read aloud to your students. The Q&A part of the session is especially lively when the students or program attendees have read the book!

____ We can arrange beforehand for Miles and William to autograph books for students or program attendees. If a book-signing is to be a part of the visit, please allow enough time. Estimate about 30 seconds per copy for an autograph and brief conversation with the purchaser. For example, if Miles and William are to sign 100 copies, they will need two (2) days before the event to accomodate the request.

____ Review our program descriptions and tell us of any specific topics you would like Miles and William to cover. We want to meet your needs. Be sure to tell us how many sessions you are interested in and how students will be involved per session.

____ Send an announcement of this visit to your local newspaper, radio stations, TV stations, and libraries. Let the community know your school or organization is sponsoring this literacy event for students, educators, readers, writers, or other book-lovers.

_____Provide a television and DVD player capable of playing a DVD along with a small table for our presentation. The boys play percussions as a part of their presentation and teach a dance and song they learned in their grandma's backyard. The video includes footage of the boys in their grandma's backyard along with publicity related to the book.

____ Arrange for one or more teachers or parent-helpers to attend programs with their students. Miles and William are at their best when they can focus on the excitement of reading, and telling about their writing, publishing, learning and creating experience.

____ Enjoy the real life experience of My Grandma's Backyard ! !
